The time of year is once again upon us when the red-carpet is rolled out for al the World's top acts to gain acclaim and recognition from the ever-present, ever-hyped Awards ceremonies!
Best British Newcomer: In Case Of Fire Best International Newcomer: The Gaslight Anthem Best Video: Mastodon - Oblivion Best International Band: Slipknot Linkin Park - Classic Songwriter Award (??) The Wildhearts - Spirit of Independence Award Alice in Chains - Icon Award
And, as the Mercury Music prize looms, the Kerrang! Awards suffer their hangover! And we can rest assured that year after year, the controversy surrounding the winners will lead us further and further into discussions and debates on who should've / could've / would've won! Bring it on!
And the winners of the Kerrang! Awards '09 are:
They beat My Passion - Attack! Attack! - Young Guns - and Fei Comodo. Admittedly, checking out these nominees was the first time I had heard a couple of these acts. And as the category specified the "British-ness" of these bands, I was definitely expecting something that sounded a little more... well... British! Although the standard was still high, and we can safely say that all four corners of these Isles are producing some great music. There seems to be a rather strong case however for Northern Irelanders, My Passion to have won the award, and I have to personally express a small level of dismay at Young Guns not clinching it. In my humble opinion, both, In Case of Fire and Attack! Attack! seem to be "more of the same" musically. When listening to these two bands, I wonder if I've heard it all before. While Fei Comodo sounded a strong contender - definitely the heaviest of the lot - I would've put my money on My Passion or Young Guns, and unfortunately lost it!
But credit where it's due, and we must congratulate In Case of Fire...
Perhaps this category should just be renamed Best American Newcomer, as you seldom see a European / South American act get this one! But, this is definitely a bit more Me!! I quite like this group, who describe their sound as "Bruce Springsteen singing for a Cure cover-band, with a tinge more aggression" - what more could we ask for?!! They beat Shinedown - Five Finger Death Punch - Metro Station - and Versa Emerge. And yep...you guessed it... all of them from the USA! Where would we be without them...! I believe the overall standard of these bands was a little superior of their Brit counterparts, with accomplished, intelligent songwriting (see Shinedown and VersaEmerge) and unique styles (Metro Station) which many would be surprised to see at a K! Awards ceremony - Metro Station's fromt-men are Trace Cyrus (older brother of Hannah Montana's Miley - son of Billy-Ray etc) and Mason Musso (older brother of another Hannah Montana star!)
I would say this one was definitely a tear-up between VersaEmerge, Shinedown, and the winners themselves, The Gaslight Anthem... but would advise anybody who hasn't already, to check the acts out for themselves.
Best Single: The Prodigy - Omen
What can you say...?! Nearly 2 decades since Liam Howlett put the band together, they're still going strong, and this single is no exception. Personally I reckon the band are back to their best and would not begrudge any award given to them this year! They beat Metallica's All Nightmare Long (Great song - shame about the title!) Placebo's For What it's Worth, and both Dead Memories and Psychosocial by Slipknot. Just goes to show what longevity can do for some bands! Metallica in my opinion would be the top contender next to The Prodigy for this one, and forget the 19 years that the Essex-Boys have under their belts... Metallica turned 28 this year - and they are certainly back to their best! Go on the Oldies!
I know that many, many people would have been disappointed had Mastodon not won anything at all! They did beat Metallica - (The Day That Never Comes) Slipknot (Suffer) Papa Roach (Hollywood Whore) and Placebo (For what its Worth). A tough choice, but I think we definitely have a deserving winner for this award.
Arguably the most important award of the night! The Metal Veterans clambered over the charred remains of Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown -Slipknot's All Hope Is Gone - Grey Britain by Gallows and Placebo's Battle For The Sun, to what we can safely say was a well anticipated victory! Kerrang! Magazine had previously named Death Magnetic as their Album of 2008 - declaring that they would have awarded it an unprecedented 10-K's - if they could!! So no shocks or surprises here then - and most fans are happy with the result... I know I certainly am!
Best Live Band: Slipknot
A seriously tough category, Slipknot must be extremely happy with this result. They saw off the likes of Metallica and The Prodigy, beating Enter Shikari and Gallows in the process! But with their notoriously unique and fearsome live performances, who could possibly argue? Slipknot certainly have their own brand of live shock-gimmickry, and I'm yet to see a disappointing account of their performances yet. Good work to them... when you are up against competition as stiff as this, you need to pull out all the stops and produce memorable, hard-hitting performances to rase the bar for live acts the world over.
Best British Band: Bullet For My Valentine
I really had a feeling that You Me At Six were going to clinch this one, due to all the promo and hype thats been going around, and with Bring Me The Horizon, Enter Shikari and (yet again this year) Gallows all in with a shot, it was a huge second successive victory for BFMV who have only now been in the Metal consciousness for 4 years! A well deserved second year running...?
Great news again for Slipknot, however with Metallica seemingly waiting in the wings to receive this one, perhaps this was a more surprising gong for the Des Moines 9-piece than their Best Live Band win. Although there could be some proof in that very pudding... and it makes a lot of sense that the awards for Live Acts, and for the Bands themselves be reflective of one another...
They also had to beat the well-established "hardest working band in metal" Lamb of God, as well as the more Alt-sounding Green Day and Madina Lake. I wouldn't have thought that many would argue that Slipknot and Metallica were the front-runners on this one, and it may be gratifying to some that Metallica were pipped to the post by Slipknot.
Other Awards on the Night were:
Machine Head - Inspirational Award
And Limp Bizkit entered into the Hall of Fame!
Linkin Park win Classic Songwriting?!? I cant put my sheer bewilderment into words! So what do we all think? Who deserved to win... or didn't... and do these awards ceremonies really matter, other than to promote artists and their material even further...?
This represents GNR at their best, I'm looking forward to the new Slash solo album.
What better to go with the costume, my Gibson Les Paul Slash 2008.
