This week in music history…
How about a little music history lesson with some fun events of the past “This week in rock…” and our birthday calendar so you can make sure you celebrate where appropriate.
1st November
• 1965 In Rochester, New York police halt a Rolling Stones concert until over 3,500 screaming fans return to order
• 1968 George Harrison became the first Beatle to release a solo album, “Wonderwall.”
• Birthdays: Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Pepper’s) (1962), Rick Allen (Def Leppard) 1963, Alex James (Blur) 1968
2nd November
• 1959 – German Elvis Presley fans are sent to jail after marching through the streets of Leipzig shouting “Long Live Elvis Presley” whilst he is Germany serving with the US Army.
• 1989 The Music “Meet me in St Louis” opened for the first time (sorry I couldn’t resist that one).
• Birthdays: Reginald Arvizu (Korn)1969
3rd November
• 1992 Bon Jovi release their first album in 5 years “Keep The Faith”
• 1957 The infamous “Great Balls of Fire” is released by Jerry Lee Lewis (his biggest hit)
• Birthdays: Adam Ant 1954, Nick Simper (Deep Purple) 1945
4th November
• 1963 – The Beatles appear at the Royal Command Performances at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London. Performing to an audience which included Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and Lord Snowden, John Lennon made his now famous announcement to close the show: "For our last number, I'd like to ask for your help. The people in the cheaper seats clap your hands and the rest of you, if you'd just rattle your jewellery. We'd like to sing a song called Twist and Shout."
• 1990 - The Musical “Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story” first opened
• 1991– Jimi Hendrix is elected into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame.
5th November
• 1977 – Ozzy Osbourne quits Black Sabbath – but rejoins a few weeks later.
• 1995 - Queen released their first studio album since the death of Freddie Mercury.
• Birthdays: Bryan Adams 1959, Art Garfunkel 1941, Jon Greenwood (Radiohead)1971,
6th November
• 1975 - The Sex Pistols made their live debut at St. Martin's School of Art in London.
• 1979 – Paul Simon kicks off a tour of the UK at London’s Hammersmith Odeon by buying a drink for each member of the audience, this act of generosity cost him around £1000 (hate to think how much at today’s prices!)
• Birthdays: Glenn Frey (The Eagles) 1948
7th November
• 1975 - A guitar player named Steve Anderson set a new world record for continuous guitar string plucking at 114 hours 17 minutes.
• 1995 – Eric Clapton - receives the Order Of the British Empire from the Prince Of Wales at Buckingham Palace.
• 2006 – “Guitar Hero II) was released in North America.
• Birthdays: Tommy Thayer (KISS) 1960, Robin Finck (Nine Inch Nails, Guns N Roses) 1971
8th November
• 1986 - Metallica performed their first live concert with Jason Newstead.
• 2005 – “Guitar Hero” the game was released in North America (YAY)
• Birthdays: Josie & The Pussycats drummer Melody (Tara Reid) – sorry couldn’t resist!
